What are Light Adjustable Lenses?
A Light Adjustable Lens is an advanced artificial lens implanted during cataract surgery, just like a standard intraocular lens. Existing technology is very good in providing excellent outcomes. However, it cannot predict how your eye will heal, how the artificial lens will sit inside the eye and importantly does not provide the patient an opportunity to trial their vision with the option of modifying it after surgery. Your vision is customised depending upon your preferences, how your eye heals and how you see in real life.
Following surgery, controlled ultraviolet (UV) light treatments are used to gently and painlessly adjust the lens power. This allows your eye surgeon to customise your vision based on how your eye actually heals and how you see in real life.
How the Adjustment Process Works
Lens Implantation
The Light Adjustable Lens is implanted during cataract surgery using the same safe, well-established techniques as standard lenses.
Healing Period
Your eye is allowed to heal and stabilise over several weeks.
Vision Customisation
You return for a series of brief in-office light treatments. Each treatment fine-tunes the lens power to improve clarity at distance, near, or both—based on your visual goals and how you see the world. For precision, not prediction.
Lens Lock-In
Once the desired vision is achieved, the lens is “locked in” with final light treatments to permanently set the prescription.

How long does the adjustment process take after surgery?
After the lens is implanted, your eye is allowed to heal and stabilise over several weeks. You will then attend a series of brief in-clinic light treatment sessions — typically two to three visits — to customise the lens to your preferred vision. Once you are satisfied with the result, a final locking treatment permanently sets the prescription.
Do I need to protect my eyes during the adjustment period?
Yes. During the adjustment period between surgery and lens lock-in, you will need to wear UV-protective spectacles whenever outdoors or in bright light. This is important because uncontrolled UV exposure could inadvertently alter the lens before it is locked. Your care team will provide the appropriate glasses and full guidance.
What happens if I am not happy with my vision after the adjustment?
One of the key advantages of the LAL is its flexibility. If you are not satisfied with a particular adjustment, the lens can be readjusted or even reversed before the final lock-in. This is a significant benefit over traditional lenses, where the prescription is set permanently during surgery.
